MacBook Neo at a Crossroads: Apple May Drop $599 Base Model or Introduce New Colors as Costs Soar

The runaway success of the MacBook Neo has become a double-edged sword for Apple. Industry sources, including veteran Taiwan-based columnist Tim Culpan, reveal that soaring demand for the entry-level laptop is straining the supply chain and production costs, prompting Cupertino to consider unprecedented moves for its most popular device.

The Component Crunch: Chip and DRAM Costs Skyrocket

The core issue is the sharp rise in component costs. The MacBook Neo uses the A18 Pro chip, the same as the iPhone 16 Pro, but initial inventory of partially defective “binned” chips with a disabled GPU core has been exhausted. To meet the doubled production target of 10 million units, Apple must order a fresh batch from TSMC using the N3E 3nm process. However, TSMC’s capacity is saturated by demand from artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure, as highlighted in our analysis of the five cracks in the AI economy. Worse, the new chips will be fully functional, thus more expensive per unit, before factoring in TSMC’s premium for expedited production. Adding to the pressure, DRAM prices have surged, also driven by AI build-outs, further inflating the bill of materials.

Possible Countermeasures: Dropping the Base Model or Adding Fresh Colors

According to Culpan, Apple is weighing two main options. The first is eliminating the $599 base configuration with 256GB of storage, effectively raising the entry price to $699 without increasing the cost of any single variant. This strategy was recently applied to the Mac Studio and Mac mini, where lower-RAM or lower-storage versions were discontinued. The second option is to introduce new color options for the MacBook Neo, currently available in Citrus, Blush, Indigo, and Silver. Fresh finishes could cushion the psychological impact of a potential price hike while keeping consumer enthusiasm high. Apple has not yet decided on specific shades.

Market Implications and Apple’s Strategic Dilemma

The MacBook Neo situation reflects a broader dynamic: the competition for advanced semiconductors between Big Tech and AI is creating bottlenecks. Apple’s push to diversify chip production, as discussed in the article on Samsung hitting a $1 trillion valuation, becomes increasingly urgent. In the meantime, consumers may face a higher entry price for Apple’s most affordable laptop, or alternatively a more colorful lineup at the same cost. The final decision will impact not only Neo sales but also the entire Mac lineup’s positioning. Apple’s ecosystem must balance innovation, volume, and margins amid rising costs. This is a direct lesson from the global supply chain, where AI’s hunger for chips is reshaping production priorities for every player.
