In an interview published on the Google for Developers channel, Android head Sameer Samat clarified some of the most anticipated OS features. The focus was on Android Halo, the new interface for AI agents, and on Gemini's ability to use car cameras to answer questions about the surrounding environment.

Google acknowledges user fatigue with the term AI

Samat admitted that users are tired of hearing the word “AI”. For this reason, the Android Show did not mention the term once, even though nearly every new feature is AI-powered. The company chose to focus on concrete user benefits rather than the underlying technology. This approach also reflects the explanations of Gboard Rambler and Superfill for forms, both part of the Gemini Intelligence push.

Android Halo: a dedicated spot for agents in the OS

One of the most significant revelations concerns how Android Halo works, introduced at Google I/O but never detailed. Samat explained that Halo is a fixed location in the status bar where the user's chosen agent – Gemini or another – can provide updates and request input. This persistent spot allows users to follow background tasks with a single tap, without hunting for notifications in different places. Halo acts as a hub for agentic tasks, making interaction smoother and more predictable. Although a full interaction has yet to be shown, the concept resembles Live Notifications, but with a specific focus on AI agents.

Gemini integrates with car cameras for real-time queries

The interview then shifted to cars with Google built-in, i.e., Android Automotive. Samat showed some Gemini upgrades: users can now adjust climate control, lane assist, and other functions using natural language. The most impressive novelty, however, is Gemini's connection to the vehicle's front cameras. Users can ask about what they see ahead, such as “What kind of building is that?” or “Is there a road hazard?” An application that combines AI and computer vision in an automotive context, with potential implications for safety and navigation.
