Apple has given Samsung Display the green light to begin module production of OLED panels for its first foldable iPhone, according to a report from TheElec citing industry sources. This milestone clears the way for the device launch later this year, with an initial order of roughly three million panels. Samsung Display has already started operating part of its back-end production lines in Vietnam to meet the demand.
The approval requires the supplier to demonstrate final assembly quality and mass-production stability. Apple set a minimum yield rate of 70%, and Samsung Display reportedly passed with yields above 80%. The three-year exclusivity agreement means Apple will not source foldable OLED panels from any other manufacturer during that period. Back-end processing, including driver circuits, flexible printed circuit boards, and protective components, is handled at Samsung Display's Vietnam facility, which has about 80 lines total, with 50 currently active and spare capacity for the modest initial order.

CoE technology and M16 materials deliver brighter, more efficient displays
The panels will use Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology, which removes the polarizer and places a color filter directly on the encapsulation layer. They will also feature Samsung Display's latest M16 OLED material set, offering improvements in brightness, color accuracy, lifespan, and power efficiency. According to rumors, the foldable iPhone will sport a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover display, with Touch ID replacing Face ID, an A20 chip, and Apple's C2 modem. Pricing is expected to start at around $2,000, positioning it as a premium device.
OLED market impact and consumer opportunities
The exclusive deal cements Samsung Display's leadership in the OLED panel industry. For consumers, this could mean higher quality but also higher initial costs. However, competition remains fierce; LG Display, for instance, recently slashed prices on OLED TVs by up to $800, as covered in a related article on LG slashes OLED TV prices. The adoption of M16 materials and CoE technology could also benefit the foldable tablet and laptop markets. Industry sources indicate Apple has already requested samples for future devices.
