The free tier of Google's Gemini app is quite productive, but subscribing to AI Plus or AI Pro unlocks much more. In May, the app switched to compute based usage limits. Free users get standard limits tracked at gemini.google.com/usage. These limits factor in prompt complexity, models used, and chat length. The limit refreshes every 5 hours until a weekly cap. With AI Plus at $4.99 per month in the US, you get limits two times higher than standard. AI Pro at $19.99 per month gives four times higher limits. A key factor is the context window: free accounts are limited to 32,000 tokens, about 50 pages of text. AI Plus increases that to 128,000 tokens, while AI Pro offers 1 million tokens, equivalent to 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code. This impacts file uploads: free users can upload videos up to 5 minutes, AI Pro up to 1 hour. Audio goes from 10 minutes to 3 hours. Code upload is reserved for subscribers.

Notebooks and memory expand with paid plans
Notebooks let you organize projects and chats with direct NotebookLM integration. Free users get 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each. AI Plus doubles that to 200 notebooks and 100 sources, while AI Pro brings 500 notebooks and 300 sources. Memory and Instructions for Gemini are available to all, but Daily Brief requires AI Plus. For image generation, free users use Nano Banana 2; subscribers access Nano Banana Pro. Video generation with Gemini Omni requires AI Plus or AI Pro. Scheduled actions are subscriber only, with a limit of 10 concurrent actions. For related insights, check the article on UK generational smoking ban and its enforcement technology.
