Apple has added a new security feature in the fifth beta of iOS 26.6: a warning that alerts users about potentially malicious iMessages. The update, currently being tested by developers, displays a popup informing the user when a message might try to harm the iPhone or compromise privacy. The discovery was shared on X by user @limpless_skelly, who posted a mockup of the notification. Code in the beta confirms the actual implementation, although the live alert has not yet been observed in action.

The new security alert in Messages

The notification, labeled "Malicious Message Detected", appears when iOS detects a potentially dangerous message. Users have three options: "Not Now" (likely to resurface later), "Share With Apple" (share the message to help investigate the attack and improve future protections), and "Don't Report". Apple explicitly asks users to share the message to guard against future threats, demonstrating a collaborative approach to security. It is not yet clear what criteria trigger the alert, but it is believed to be a response to sophisticated zero-click exploits and phishing attempts in the Messages app.

How reporting to Apple works

By sharing the message with Apple, users allow the company to analyze the threat and update defenses. This mechanism is similar to spam reporting but focuses on more serious threats. Apple has a long history of protecting iMessage; with iOS 14 it introduced "BlastDoor", a sandbox system that isolates suspicious messages. However, in 2021, a zero-click exploit managed to bypass BlastDoor and install spyware, prompting Apple to further enhance security. Since then, features like Lockdown Mode, iMessage Contact Key Verification, and spam filtering have been added. The new warning represents an additional layer of defense.

A familiar but refined system

An interesting aspect is the resemblance of the popup to fake scam alerts that sometimes appear in Safari. This could confuse less experienced users, who might mistake the legitimate warning for a scam. Apple will likely need to refine the interface to make it unmistakable. Beta 5 is the latest of five releases for iOS 26.6, with a public launch expected around the end of July. With this feature, Apple demonstrates its commitment to keeping pace with increasingly sophisticated cyber threats by integrating proactive alerts directly into the operating system.

Availability and upcoming release

Currently, the feature is only available to developers enrolled in the beta program. The final version of iOS 26.6 should be distributed to all users by the end of the month. For regular iMessage users, this update represents an important step forward in protecting privacy and personal data. It remains to be seen whether the warning will be extended to other messaging apps or remain exclusive to iMessage. Digital security is an increasingly central topic, and Apple continues to invest resources to protect its users. For more information about iMessage, you can consult the Wikipedia page.
