iOS 27 moves Notification Center and makes Siri AI the priority after 15 years

For fifteen years, iPhone and iPad users have opened Notification Center by swiping down from the center of the top edge of the display. With iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple is fundamentally changing that gesture and reassigning it to the new Siri AI assistant, effectively breaking a habit that dates back to iOS 5 in 2011.

Swiping from the top edge now invokes Siri AI

When users enable the new Siri AI experience, a swipe from the middle of the top edge no longer opens the notifications panel but calls up the intelligent assistant. The behavior shifted slightly between the first two beta releases, but the fourth developer beta and the second public beta suggest the change will ship this fall. Access to Notification Center is not disappearing entirely, it is simply moving to a smaller target area in the upper left corner of the screen.

Notification Center still works from the left corner

Anyone who still wants to check alerts can do so by swiping down from the top left edge. With Siri AI enabled, notifications now animate in from that corner, a deliberate way to guide users toward a more compact surface. Apple is clearly prioritizing Siri AI, as most of the top edge is now devoted to summoning the assistant while notifications are relegated to a narrow strip.

The notification surface shrinks especially on iPad

On the first iPadOS 27 beta, the situation was even more extreme. The area above Home screen app icons was almost entirely reserved for Siri AI, and the space to open Notification Center got smaller if you disabled the AM/PM display or the date. The second beta brought improvements, with more uniform regions on both sides. One side houses Notification Center, the other houses Control Center, each roughly the size of two app columns. Everything else remains dedicated to Siri.

After two months of testing, new habits are not convincing everyone

The author of the original analysis, after nearly two months of daily use, admits to wanting the old behavior back and wishing for a setting to disable Siri invocation from the center swipe. Since no such option exists, the only solution is to build new muscle memory and avoid the central part of the top bezel. Early feedback around Siri AI is overwhelmingly positive, and hearing praise for Apple's assistant is itself something that will take time to get used to. The debate over interface changes is not exclusive to Apple, as shown by the recent controversy surrounding LG and Microsoft over adware on Windows 11 monitors.
