With iPadOS 26, Apple completely reinvented multitasking on the iPad by introducing windowing. While this brought more flexibility for power users, it initially removed simpler features like Split View and Slide Over. Those eventually returned in later betas, but only within the new windowing system, making the experience more cumbersome.
Split View and Slide Over remain incomplete
Many hoped iPadOS 27 would improve the situation, but those expectations were disappointed. The current system requires windowing to be enabled for Split View and Slide Over to work, and their behavior is no longer as intuitive. Positioning windows for snapping requires precision, and a slight mistake can trigger split view unintentionally. Moreover, Slide Over has not fully returned: it lacks the fluidity it had before iPadOS 26. Apple added a long press on the traffic lights to manage states, but this feels unnatural for basic tablet use.

A proposal: two distinct multitasking modes
An ideal solution would be to offer two sets of multitasking options: a Classic mode that opens apps full screen with simple access to Slide Over and Split View, and a Pro mode that retains the windowing system from iPadOS 26, with the option to enable Stage Manager. This separation would let each user choose the appropriate complexity level. Many iPad owners, especially those using the tablet without a keyboard, prefer lightweight multitasking, while those with Magic Keyboard or external displays can fully leverage windows.

The importance of simple multitasking for the traditional iPad
Not everyone uses the iPad as a laptop replacement. For many, it is a device for content consumption, reading, and creativity. Forcing everyone into a complex system penalizes those who simply want two apps side by side without fuss. A simplified multitasking option, separate from windowing, would better serve the majority. Apple needs to listen to community feedback and consider a redesign, perhaps in the next update. For more on Apple software updates, check out our article on Apple Watch and Siri with iOS 27.
