Mistral AI, the French artificial intelligence startup founded in 2023, has reached $400 million in annual recurring revenue as of February 2026, with a goal to surpass $1 billion by year-end. While many view it as a European rival to OpenAI, the company's strategy is markedly different: it follows the Palantir playbook, deploying engineers on-site with governments and large enterprises to customize AI models. Today, attention is on the new open-weight model, for which early access opened in July 2026.
An open-weight model arriving in July
CEO Arthur Mensch announced on LinkedIn that the upcoming model, described as "very exciting," will be open-weight, with early access already available from July. Mensch emphasized that while Mistral does not yet own the best language models, the gap is narrowing steadily. In less compute-bound areas such as voice, vision, and document processing, the company boasts state-of-the-art solutions. Mistral has formed strategic collaborations with Microsoft, ASML, Accenture, Agence France-Presse, the French army, CMA CGM, Helsing, IBM, Orange, and Stellantis.
