Nvidia's latest graphics driver, version 616.56, is causing serious issues for many GeForce GPU owners, with screen flicker and color corruption disrupting gaming and everyday PC use. The bug, first spotted by Wccftech and confirmed on X by Renan Maniero, has prompted Nvidia to state that it is testing an official fix, as reported on the GeForce forums.

Symptoms include white or black flickering, as well as brief flashes of color corruption, appearing in games like The Last of Us and Minecraft, but also on the Windows desktop, during web browsing, and while playing YouTube videos. Numerous Reddit threads gather complaints from users who describe the problem as widespread and particularly annoying, with some noting that driver quality has declined since the launch of the RTX 5000 series.

The bug also affects older GPUs like RTX 2000 and user patience is running out

The issue does not spare older graphics cards, such as the RTX 2000, which has increased frustration among gamers. One Redditor comments that 'it's been particularly bad since Blackwell' and that the initial RTX 5000 problems, such as DisplayPort 2.1 not working with HDR, flickering, and black screens, have made everything 'a complete mess.' Another adds that it is 'pretty shocking seeing this from a trillionaire company on a stable build,' while a third laments being half a year behind on updates and thinking about not updating at all.

Nvidia promises a patch but for now only partial workarounds exist

While waiting for the official fix, users have identified potential workarounds. Maniero suggests switching from 8-bit to 10-bit color mode, if the monitor supports it, or enabling Windows Auto Color Management (ACM). Others on Reddit propose switching from DisplayPort to HDMI or disabling Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) in Windows 11, which requires caution. The simplest solution remains rolling back to a previous driver version, which many have already done successfully.

This is not the first time Nvidia has faced criticism over driver quality. The RTX 5000 series had a turbulent launch, and the situation does not seem to have stabilized. Meanwhile, gamers continue to report issues and demand a swift response. As if that weren't enough, the leadership change at Apple with John Ternus has captured the tech world's attention, but for PC enthusiasts, the priority remains stable drivers. In this context, user patience is quickly running out.

The hope is that Nvidia's patch arrives soon, possibly as a hotfix, to definitively resolve this bug. In the meantime, affected users can only try the workarounds or wait with resignation. The situation also highlights a broader issue: the growing complexity of modern GPU drivers, which require increasingly thorough testing. In a competitive market, user trust is crucial, and every mistake weighs on Nvidia's reputation. The Santa Clara giant will need to prove it can handle these challenges to maintain its leadership in the graphics card industry.
