After months of announcements and gradual transitions, Samsung Messages has finally shut down its servers. The messaging app pre-installed on Galaxy phones for years has stopped working on devices running Android 12 or higher as of this month. Samsung had already confirmed the shutdown in April 2026, but the actual termination of service has now been implemented, though the exact date was not officially communicated.
The long march toward Google Messages
The abandonment of Samsung Messages did not happen overnight. As early as 2022, Google Messages became the default app on new Galaxy devices, and in 2024 Samsung stopped pre-installing its own app in the United States. A brief revival in 2025, with RCS support and new features, gave some users hope, but the Korean company ultimately decided to focus on the Google ecosystem, consistent with a consolidation strategy seen in other manufacturers, as highlighted by the recent case of OnePlus directing customers to OPPO in Germany.

How the forced migration works
On all Galaxy devices with Android 14 or later, the transition to Google Messages is automatic: the Samsung Messages icon is replaced and data is transferred in the background. Users on Android 12 and 13 must manually download the Google app, but they can continue using Samsung Messages only if they own a device with Android 11 or earlier, which remains unaffected. In any case, Samsung has guaranteed that RCS messages will remain active through Google Messages, although visual customizations (themes, layout) will no longer be available.
User reactions: themes and interface take center stage
In a poll conducted by 9to5Google, the majority of users cited Samsung Messages' interface, considered cleaner and more customizable, as the main reason for resisting the change. Colorful themes were another factor of attachment to the native app. However, Google Messages has closed some of the gap with its Material You interface update, and full integration with the Google ecosystem — including foldable devices and smartwatches — may make the switch less painful. What changes for privacy and data
The shift to Google Messages entails acceptance of Google's privacy policies, which include analyzing messages to improve services (e.g., smart suggestions). Samsung Messages offered a more local data management approach. Privacy-conscious users should therefore consider the end-to-end encryption that Google Messages provides for RCS chats, but also the metadata collection associated with a Google account. The closure of Samsung Messages marks the end of an era for Galaxy messaging. Users who have not yet made the transition will find the app replaced automatically, but for those who want more granular control, manual download of Google Messages is still possible until the last day of service, which Samsung has not specified exactly but falls within July 2026.
