Superhuman, the company behind the popular writing assistant Grammarly, has announced the acquisition of GPTZero, a service specialized in identifying AI-generated content. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The move raises questions about how a company that encourages AI use for writing can also help unmask artificial texts.
A blend of assisted writing and digital authenticity
GPTZero is known for tools like hallucination and plagiarism detection, as well as a feature showing how much of the internet is AI-generated. Superhuman plans to integrate these capabilities into its Superhuman Go AI assistant to strengthen its authenticity efforts. The company stated that teachers and students will remain the priority audience after the acquisition. GPTZero emphasized that Superhuman will bring its tools to places where people already read and write, increasing their reach.

At first glance, the deal appears contradictory. Superhuman pushes users to generate content with AI through Grammarly, yet now owns a system to detect AI. This duality echoes past criticisms, such as when Grammarly tried to offer AI-generated feedback mimicking other writers' styles, causing backlash.
