For nearly a decade, the NVIDIA Shield TV has dominated the streaming device market, but the last hardware update came in 2019. While NVIDIA rides the AI wave, enthusiasts wonder about the future of their beloved device. Based on hands-on experience with the original 2015 model, purchased during Prime Day 2016 and still in active use, five critical areas emerge that NVIDIA must improve to keep ahead of competitors like Apple TV 4K and Chromecast with Google TV.
Almost perfect remote with two flaws: fixed Netflix button and fragile battery cover
The 2019 remote is comfortable, backlit, and has a speaker for finding it, but it suffers from two annoying issues. First, the dedicated Netflix button: not everyone has a Netflix subscription, and a useless hardware button is clutter. NVIDIA should replace it with customizable shortcuts, building on the existing double-tap customization for Home and Menu buttons. Second, the battery cover pops off too easily. A more secure latch would fix this without ruining an otherwise excellent design.

Standard power connector to prevent premature device death
Except for the 2019 cylindrical base model, all Shield TVs use a proprietary power connector. NVIDIA does not sell official replacements, forcing users to hunt for third-party options on AliExpress or eBay at high prices and with safety risks. A failing power supply can cause random reboots, LED flickering, boot loops, and complete failure. NVIDIA should adopt a standard connector, like a common barrel jack, or at least sell replacement units directly. This would extend device lifespan, as many owners keep their Shield for over a decade, as seen with long-lasting older models.
Superior hardware specs for future-proofing and Android gaming
The original Shield TV amazed with monstrous specs: the Tegra X1, based on NVIDIA's desktop GPU architecture, was so powerful that Nintendo used a modified version for the Switch. Today, with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (expandable via MicroSD or external HDD), the device is showing its age. NVIDIA should aim for 8-12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage to match the original's longevity. This would handle modern apps and Android games like Knights of the Old Republic ports with ease. A partnership with Microsoft for an official Xbox Game Pass streaming app would transform the Shield into a hybrid console.

Operating system needs to upgrade to Google TV
Android TV on the Shield is aging poorly. The Google Play Movies app is gone, and accessing purchased movies from Google Play is cumbersome, requiring navigation through the Shop tab or using the buggy YouTube app. Moreover, Google Assistant has been nearly non-functional for over a year, and Gemini will never come to this hardware. Google TV would provide a modern, integrated experience with a well-organized movie library and support for new features. NVIDIA should collaborate with Google to bring Google TV to new models, while continuing software updates for existing devices, similar to other products that lose support.

Thunderbolt ports and MicroSD slot for an even more powerful Plex server
Many enthusiasts use the Shield TV as a Plex server, thanks to its USB 3.0 ports and MicroSD slot, but the 2019 Pro model removed the latter. NVIDIA should reintroduce the MicroSD slot and, for a leap forward, replace USB-A ports with Thunderbolt. This would enable much higher transfer speeds for massive media libraries, making the Shield TV the ideal choice for home Plex servers. Thunderbolt would also ensure compatibility with modern peripherals, keeping the device relevant for years.
NVIDIA has not announced plans for a new Shield TV, but the community hopes for a comeback. To remain the best streaming device, these five upgrades are essential. Meanwhile, current owners continue to receive software updates, akin to other devices that are losing support. The future of the Shield TV is uncertain, but the demands are clear and concrete.
