WWDC 2026: Siri AI Becomes an App, iOS 27 Revolutionizes Photos and Automation with Artificial Intelligence

Apple kicked off WWDC 2026 with a barrage of announcements marking Tim Cook's farewell and the start of a new era for artificial intelligence on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The centerpiece is Siri AI, a completely revamped assistant that now has its own dedicated app.

Siri AI: A dedicated app and a new language

Siri AI is no longer just a voice. On iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, the assistant becomes a full-fledged app with a chat window for complex interactions. It supports personal context understanding (messages, emails, photos) and on-screen awareness. For example, pointing the camera at a bill lets Siri AI split the tab using Apple Cash. Apple partnered with Google Gemini to broaden real-world knowledge.

AI-powered photos and creativity

The Photos app introduces AI editing tools. A new "Reframe" feature lets users adjust spatial perspective on images. Image Playground gets a major overhaul: it now generates photorealistic images via a model running on Private Cloud Compute, with SynthID watermark. Edits can be made by voice description or touch gestures.

Smart automation and parental controls

The Shortcuts app receives an AI upgrade: users can describe the desired workflow in natural language, and the assistant creates it automatically. The Home app also gets smarter, with AI descriptions of HomeKit camera clips. For parents, iOS 27 introduces "Ask to Browse" for Safari, Time Allowances, and a redesigned Screen Time interface.

Availability and limitations

Developer betas are available now, public betas in July, and the fall release. Siri AI will not arrive in the European Union on iPhone and iPad due to the Digital Markets Act, only on Mac. Compatible devices include iPhone 15 Pro and later, iPad with M1 or newer, and Macs with Apple Silicon.

The scope of these updates is enormous: Apple bets on an assistant that can act across all apps, opening up unprecedented productivity and creativity scenarios. However, the geographic fragmentation of AI risks creating a digital divide between those who can use Siri AI and those who cannot. Developers can already integrate the new Imaging and Foundation Models APIs to build "agentic" apps.
