The 20th-anniversary iPhone, slated for 2027, is rumored to introduce a groundbreaking display technology potentially named "Liquid Glass Display." This innovation aims to make the screen bezels virtually disappear, creating a more immersive visual experience. The key feature will be a display that curves around all four edges of the device, a design facilitated by new curved-screen technology.
According to leaker Ice Universe, this is not a traditional quad-curved display or similar solutions seen on Android phones. Its curvature is expected to be extremely subtle, but the visual impact will be enhanced by a sophisticated blend of optical refraction, light-guiding structures, and engineered visual illusions. The goal is to render the bezels nearly invisible while ensuring natural edge viewing.
Apple is also reportedly adopting Samsung's COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) OLED technology, promising a brighter and thinner display compared to current panels. The "Liquid Glass Display" moniker is said to be a nod to Apple's latest software interface redesign.
Apple's ultimate aim for the 20th-anniversary iPhone is a completely uninterrupted display. However, concealing the Face ID system and the front-facing camera entirely under the panel presents a significant challenge. Display analyst Ross Young suggests that under-display Face ID might not be ready for the 2027 iPhone. If this is the case, a small punch-hole cutout for the front camera could still be necessary, while Face ID would be integrated under the display.
