After weeks of uncertainty, Anthropic's Fable 5 AI model is once again accessible worldwide. The company announced that Claude users can now select Fable 5 directly from the interface, with an in-app message confirming the restoration. The return follows the Trump administration's decision to revoke the export restrictions that had blocked the model for non-U.S. citizens.
A flagship model stalled by trade rules
Fable 5 is the first Mythos-class model publicly released by Anthropic, launched on June 9, 2026. Its capabilities exceed those of any previously released model, with exceptional performance in software engineering, knowledge work, vision, and scientific research. Compared to Opus models, Fable 5 handles longer and more complex tasks and operates autonomously for extended periods. However, shortly after launch, Amazon discovered a prompt that could bypass built-in safety measures, leading the model to identify software vulnerabilities. Anthropic's investigation revealed that older and competing models could also find the same flaws, but the discovery prompted the Trump administration to impose export controls, forcing Anthropic to suspend access for foreign users. The company lacked tools to verify users' nationality, so it had to temporarily withdraw Fable 5.

A technical fix to restore trust
To overcome the block, Anthropic developed a new classifier that blocks the bypass technique in more than 99% of cases. This allowed the company to demonstrate to the government that safeguards are now effective, leading to the removal of export controls. Until July 7, 2026, eligible Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers can use Fable 5 for up to 50% of their plan's weekly usage limit; beyond that, credits are required. After July 7, Fable 5 will be available only via usage credits. Simultaneously, Anthropic restored access to Mythos 5, the next model in its Project Glasswing initiative, aimed at large enterprises and federal agencies defending critical infrastructure. The company stated its intention to deepen cooperation with the U.S. government on pre-release testing, information sharing, and joint research.
