A leaker known as Fixed Focus Digital reported on Weibo that Apple has reduced iPhone 17 lineup production plans by approximately 15%, citing reliable sources within the supply chain. This marks the end of an extraordinary sales run that lasted nine months, during which the iPhone 17 dominated global smartphone rankings.

The slowdown in iPhone 17 production cycle

The leaker stated that the current outlook for the iPhone 17 will not hold for long, adding that major global smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and Honor, have also lowered their shipment targets by 15 to 30%. This indicates a broader market slowdown. For Apple, the decline is also attributed to the natural product cycle: with the expected launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and the company's first foldable iPhone in September, many customers have already purchased an iPhone 17.

Global smartphone market context

Despite the production cut, recent data highlights a stellar performance. According to TrendForce in June, Apple's iPhone production surged 19.7% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, while the overall market contracted 1.7%. Counterpoint Research found that the iPhone 17 was the best-selling smartphone globally in Q1 2026, capturing 6% of worldwide unit sales, followed by iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro. Apple also topped the global smartphone market in Q1 for the first time ever, with 21% of shipments and 9% year-over-year growth.

Past performance and future outlook

The iPhone 17's success began immediately after its launch in September 2025. Apple asked two suppliers to increase daily output by at least 30% following a record pre-order weekend. In January, Tim Cook described holiday demand as simply staggering, with iPhone revenue reaching $85.2 billion, an all-time high. As the next generation approaches, the production cut is a natural adjustment. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing new iPad Pro and entry-level MacBook Pro models slated for early 2027.
