Apple is set to introduce its first water-resistant iPad with the upcoming iPad mini, expected to launch by October. The device will finally close a long-standing gap with dedicated e-readers like the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Libra Color, both of which already offer immersion protection. Until now, no iPad has carried an official water resistance rating, limiting its use near water.
Vibration-based speaker system enables sealed chassis
According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has developed a novel audio solution that eliminates traditional speaker grilles. The new design uses mechanical actuators to vibrate flat surfaces of the chassis, effectively turning the body into a speaker cone. This approach, described in an Apple patent from 2014, removes the primary entry points for water and dust. Unlike the iPhone, which relies on adhesives and gaskets to seal openings, the iPad mini takes a more radical approach: no holes, no ingress. The exact IP rating is unconfirmed; the iPhone 16 Pro offers IP68 (up to 6 meters for 30 minutes). The iPad mini is expected to achieve at least IP67, making it safe for accidental splashes and shallow submersion.

OLED display upgrade enhances visual experience
Water resistance is just one of several major upgrades. ETNews reported that Samsung Display has begun mass production of 8.4-inch LTPS OLED panels for the new iPad mini. While the 60Hz refresh rate rules out ProMotion, the transition from LCD to OLED brings deeper blacks, higher contrast, and better power efficiency. This places the mini as a serious contender for portable entertainment, alongside the iPad Pro.
