Apple Revamps Strategy: Global Apple Sports Expansion, Product Design Shakeup, and 25 Years of Retail

[2026-05-19] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

Apple had a packed day of significant announcements, ranging from the global expansion of its Sports app to a deep internal reorganization of hardware design leadership and the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the first Apple Stores. In an evolving market, the Cupertino giant is clearly laying the groundwork for the next era, led by future CEO John Ternus.

Apple Sports Goes Global Ahead of the 2026 World Cup

The Apple Sports app, initially launched in North America, South America, and Europe, has taken a giant leap by expanding to over 90 new countries, including Australia, Japan, India, Singapore, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa. With this expansion, the application is now available in 170 countries and regions worldwide. The timing is no coincidence: Apple has integrated dedicated features for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering a tournament bracket view, visual formations for each match, and one-tap access to comprehensive news via Apple News. The Live Activities feature allows users to follow their favorite teams directly from the iPhone lock screen or Apple Watch. Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Music, Sports, and Beats, stated that the World Cup unites global fans, making it the ideal moment to bring Apple Sports to more users. The app remains exclusive to the iPhone and aims to become a go-to destination for real-time sports enthusiasts. Hardware Design Shakeup: Srouji Takes the Helm

Ahead of the CEO change scheduled for September 1, with John Ternus succeeding Tim Cook, Apple has decided to shake up product design oversight. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, longtime Apple chip chief Johny Srouji has been appointed Chief Hardware Officer and has already reorganized hardware development leadership to accelerate work on future devices. The goal is to more closely integrate the teams that develop chips with those that create products. Specifically, product design supervision moves from Kate Bergeron to two of her longtime deputies: Shelly Goldberg, formerly in charge of Mac design, and Dave Pakula, who managed Apple Watch, iPad, and AirPods. Bergeron will now oversee product reliability across all devices. Additionally, two former Ternus deputies, Matt Costello (home and audio) and Kevin Lynch (robotics), will report directly to Srouji. This reshuffle marks a major shift toward greater silicon and product integration.

Twenty-Five Years of Apple Retail: From a Gamble to an Empire

On May 19, 2001, the first two Apple Stores opened at Tysons Corner (Virginia) and Glendale Galleria (California). Today, 25 years later, Cupertino celebrates an anniversary that once seemed a gamble. Steve Jobs, with a 2.8% market share, decided to open physical stores to control the customer experience after years of marginal display in third-party retailers. With the help of Ron Johnson (ex-Target) and Mickey Drexler (ex-Gap), the Genius Bar concept and single-entrance layout were born. Despite initial skepticism, by 2003 each store was generating $3 million in profit per quarter. Today Apple operates over 500 stores in 27 countries, with some of the highest sales per square foot in the industry. The original Tysons Corner store was relocated and reopened in a larger space in 2023. For a deeper dive into supply chain challenges, see our analysis of the double cyber crisis in May.

Deals and Accessories: Memorial Day Sales and New MagSafe Grip

Meanwhile, Best Buy has launched its traditional Memorial Day sale, with discounts on MacBook Air, iPad, Samsung The Frame TVs, and many other tech products — no membership required. Apple has also re-released its Hikawa Grip & Stand for iPhone in three new colors (Orange Swirl, Glow Blue, and Speckled Stone) after the original version sold out. Designed in collaboration with PopSockets with a focus on accessibility, the premium silicone grip attaches magnetically via MagSafe and doubles as a stand. The price is $54.95 in the United States. This move, combined with the Apple Sports expansion and internal restructuring, paints a picture of an Apple that never stops, celebrating its past while investing in the future.
