Apple is testing a new AI-driven feature called Live Notes at select Genius Bars, designed to transcribe conversations between technicians and customers during repair sessions. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the system aims to save employees time by eliminating the need for manual note-taking, allowing them to focus more on the customer.

The feature is currently opt-in, requiring explicit consent from both the employee and the customer before activation. Once enabled, Live Notes records and transcribes the dialogue, integrating the text into the repair record on the technician's iPad. This approach prioritizes privacy and ensures that the tool is used only when both parties agree.

AI Streamlines Technician Work and Enhances Customer Experience

The AI-generated transcript is automatically added to the session log, reducing the risk of errors and freeing up technicians to concentrate on troubleshooting. Early tests indicate that the system can accurately recognize technical jargon and Apple-specific terms, maintaining high transcription quality.

This initiative is part of Apple's broader push to embed artificial intelligence into its retail services. In recent months, the company has already deployed AI for device diagnostics and appointment scheduling. Live Notes represents another step toward a more seamless and personalized support experience.

Privacy and Opt-In Consent Take Center Stage

Apple has emphasized that Live Notes is designed with strict privacy safeguards. The transcripts are stored only for the duration of the service session and are encrypted. The company has stated that the data is not used to train external AI models, addressing growing public concern over voice data handling. The opt-in requirement ensures that customers maintain control over their personal information.

It remains unclear when Live Notes will be widely rolled out. The testing phase could last several months, with a potential launch later this year. Success will depend on feedback from both employees and customers, as well as the system's ability to handle diverse accents and background noise common in busy retail environments.

In related news, Apple has recently introduced new settings to disable music videos on Spotify, as covered in an article on Spotify adding a toggle to disable music videos. For more on Apple's retail evolution, see the Wikipedia page on Apple Store.
