A new chapter in space exploration has been marked with the successful completion of the Artemis II mission. The Orion capsule, after a ten-day journey circling the Moon, safely splashed down off the coast of San Diego last night at 8:07 PM Eastern time, concluding one of the most ambitious test flights aimed at returning humanity to the lunar surface. Controlled and Safe Re-entry
The separation of the Orion capsule from its service module occurred at 7:33 PM, a critical step to ensure the crew's safety. This was caused by the capsule's overheating as it began its guided descent. Orion employs an advanced system of 11 parachutes to reduce its velocity. The drogue parachutes were deployed at 23,400 feet to stabilize and slow the capsule, followed by their release at 5,400 feet to allow the three main parachutes to deploy. This system reduced the capsule's velocity to about 200 feet per second, enabling a safe splashdown.
