Atari Acquires Crossy Road Studio and PlayStation Unveils Wireless Fight Stick and Gaming Monitor

Two announcements are heating up the summer gaming calendar. Atari has acquired Hipster Whale, the Australian studio behind the mobile hit Crossy Road. At the same time, Sony revealed a new wireless fight stick and a dedicated gaming monitor for PlayStation, both arriving in August.

Atari Bets on Mobile Gaming

The acquisition of Hipster Whale is a strategic move for Atari, aiming to expand its intellectual property portfolio in the smartphone sector. Crossy Road, with its simple and viral gameplay, has generated hundreds of millions of downloads. The deal allows Atari to integrate the creative team and mobile development expertise, a market where the historic brand seeks a revival. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the agreement includes existing titles and those in development.

This is not the first time a legacy gaming company has ventured into mobile: the acquisition reinforces the trend of classic gaming firms regaining relevance through modern platforms. For players, it means iconic franchises could soon land on iOS and Android with the quality of an experienced team.

PlayStation Expands Accessory Lineup

On the Sony side, the PlayStation Wireless Fight Stick, an arcade controller designed for fighting games, and a new official gaming monitor have been confirmed. Both devices will be available from August. The wireless fight stick promises low latency and compatibility with PS5 and PC. The monitor targets high refresh rates and fast response times for competitive play. Sony also mentioned that the Pulse Elevate wireless speakers will arrive later this year.

The expansion of the hardware lineup demonstrates PlayStation's commitment to building a complete gaming ecosystem beyond the console. Focusing on niche accessories like fight sticks shows attention to loyal communities.

Though separate, these two stories confirm a vibrant industry: on one side the rediscovery of retro and mobile gaming, on the other the evolution of specialized hardware.
