The Xbox ecosystem continues to surprise enthusiasts with one of its most loved and often underrated features. Xbox Play Anywhere allows you to buy a game once and have it on both Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S, with saves synced through the cloud. This feature is currently experiencing a golden moment, as demonstrated by the recent arrival of Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most acclaimed RPGs of recent years, which landed on the service almost three years after its original launch. The news excited players, but it is the reason behind this choice that reveals how important Play Anywhere has become for developers.
Larian explains why it chose Play Anywhere for Baldur's Gate 3
Michael Douse, Larian Studios' publishing director, stated that the integration happened because it is a pretty cool part of the Xbox ecosystem and it means a lot to the players who enjoy that ecosystem. He added that they had the resources and time, and figured it would make a few folks happy. A simple but significant response, highlighting how studios are starting to see the value of this feature not just as a Game Pass obligation, but as a real benefit for the community. In recent months, a series of AAA titles have joined the program, including 007 First Light, Hell is Us, Palworld 1.0, Subnautica 2, and others. Upcoming titles include Blood of the Dawnwalker and Onimusha Way of the Sword, signaling a growing trend.

The technical simplicity behind Play Anywhere according to Fullset
Sascha Reuter from Fullset, the studio that brought Project Neon to Xbox Play Anywhere, also explained the advantages. He compared developing for Play Anywhere to using a Dropbox folder, thanks to Microsoft's backend that allows distributing packages for multiple platforms effortlessly. The API for designating a save folder is simple to set up, prevents overwriting, and handles syncing via Azure. This technical ease is a key factor driving many developers to adopt the feature. Moreover, Microsoft recently introduced new APIs for cross-platform save syncing, designed for those who want to go beyond the Xbox ecosystem, in an increasingly multi-device world.

The growth of Play Anywhere and future challenges
Despite the enthusiasm, obstacles remain. Applying Play Anywhere retroactively to games with divergent codebases can cause synchronization errors. For this reason, titles like Fallout 76 have never received Play Anywhere support. However, there are exceptions like Resident Evil 8, which gained support years after launch, just like Baldur's Gate 3. Some publishers do not see the value of the feature, such as Ubisoft which offers free PC versions but without Xbox achievements, or EA which offers no synchronicity between its Xbox and PC versions. Despite this, recent data shows that Play Anywhere is reaching a 50% adoption rate for new games. With Microsoft's upcoming backward compatibility emulator on PC, even more Xbox games could come to PC via Play Anywhere, further strengthening the service.
