China's Nuclear Push. Europe's Energy Dependence Is a Choice, Not a Fate

[2026-06-13] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

The fact. China announced plans to build 30 new nuclear reactors by 2030, becoming the world's top atomic energy producer. While Beijing accelerates, Europe is stuck in ideological trench warfare between pro-nuclear countries (France, Poland) and anti-nuclear ones (Germany, Austria). Meanwhile, gas prices keep dictating our market.

Why it matters. Italy imports over 70% of its energy. Every geopolitical crisis — and there've been three in five years — translates into soaring bills and industrial production at risk. China's nuclear bet isn't just about energy: it's about technology. Fourth-generation reactors need control software, IoT sensors, AI for predictive maintenance. Building power plants means building digital ecosystems. Beijing is setting up the world's largest energy digitalization lab. Europe, torn by ideological vetoes, risks falling behind on both supply and tech innovation.

Our position

We, at Meteora Web, see it this way: Europe's nuclear debate is stuck two decades in the past. While we argue about referendums and waste, we miss the concrete point: without a stable, dispatchable baseload power source, every energy transition plan is a house of cards. We don't do nuclear engineering, but we understand technology and business. What we see is Italian SMEs — manufacturing, logistics — being crushed by energy costs that Chinese and American competitors don't have. It's a competitiveness issue, not just CO2. Europe must choose: either build modern, safe nuclear capacity, or accept being an economic battlefield between China and the US. The 'renewables only' path is noble but unrealistic for an industrial powerhouse like Germany or Italy.

What to do. For tech professionals in Italy — developers, sysadmins, digital entrepreneurs — there's a clear opportunity: specialize in energy software. Smart grids, consumption monitoring, cybersecurity for critical infrastructure. The EU Recovery Plan has allocated billions for energy digitalization. If Europe won't build reactors, it must at least build the digital infrastructure to manage a more fragile grid. We, in our own small way, are already helping clients implement custom web apps for energy tracking. The future is there. Let's not wait for politicians to decide: let's prepare to be the technology providers for whoever wins the game.
