The innovative strategy hinges on the analogy between the skills required to manage a complex video game and those needed to direct air traffic. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy emphasized that this communication campaign, with its focus on gaming, is designed to attract young adults who already possess many of the hard skills essential for becoming a successful air traffic controller. The Shortage Challenge
The problem of the air traffic controller shortage is not new for the FAA. Since the 2010s, the agency has seen more departures than hires in its workforce, a trend significantly exacerbated during the pandemic. Despite efforts to increase hiring since 2021, at the end of 2025, the workforce still numbered 13,164 controllers, a 6 percent decrease compared to 2015. Concurrently, the number of flights managed has increased by about 10 percent, reaching 30.8 million. The FAA refers to an "elite squad" of 14,000 controllers protecting millions of daily passengers, underscoring the crucial importance of this role.
Requirements and Opportunities
To attract this new cohort, the agency is not overlooking financial incentives. The average salary for an air traffic controller, after three years of service, stands at around $155,000. Key requirements for applicants include U.S. citizenship, being under 31 years of age, and fluent English proficiency. The selection process involves an aptitude test, a medical screening, and intensive academy training.
