Global Fraud Crackdown: Meta Removes One Million Accounts as AI Worms Threaten Networks

An unprecedented joint operation has led to the removal of over one million fraudulent accounts on Meta. The collaboration involved Microsoft, SpaceX, Coinbase, the U.S. Department of Justice, and international law enforcement, targeting scam networks concentrated in Southeast Asia. At the same time, security researchers demonstrated a new type of threat: an artificial intelligence-powered worm capable of spreading autonomously without any human intervention.

Unprecedented Operation Against Digital Scams

Meta stated it removed more than one million fake and compromised accounts used for romance scams, crypto fraud, and tech support schemes. The operation, code-named Sentinel Shield, saw active participation from specialized teams at Microsoft and SpaceX, which provided data on cloud infrastructure and network technologies used by criminals. The DOJ coordinated arrests across multiple countries, while Coinbase helped trace cryptocurrency flows. This success shows how public-private collaboration is critical to combating digital crime. As noted in earlier analyses, the regulatory gap between the US and the European Union could slow similar actions in Europe.

The Danger of AI-Powered Worms

A group of cybersecurity researchers has created an AI worm capable of propagating through networks and cloud systems without manual commands. The code, named 'Morris AI', exploits large language models to rewrite its payload in real time, evading signature-based detection. Researchers demonstrated how the worm could infect smart email applications, voice assistants, and enterprise AI agents, potentially causing catastrophic damage. While this is a proof of concept, the demonstration highlights the urgent need to rethink defense strategies. Not just antivirus, but behavioral detection and AI network segmentation. The EU, with its AI Act, may need to quickly update regulations to address these novel threats.

These developments come amid a surge in deepfake voice scams already hurting users and businesses. The combination of large-scale fraud and autonomous AI worms represents a double challenge for cybersecurity in 2026. Organizations must invest in cross-sector collaboration and defensive AI, while governments must accelerate legal harmonization to keep pace with cybercriminals.
