Microsoft has recently released four original Xbox titles on PC, bringing backwards compatibility to a new platform. For years Xbox consoles have enjoyed this feature, but to achieve it on PC, Microsoft used a native x86 version of its internal Xbox 360 emulator. As expected, modders have quickly seized the opportunity to run Xbox 360 games on PC, with promising but mixed results.

Discovery of GOD files and the Xe03 emulator

Analysis of the packages of backwards compatible titles revealed they are packaged as GOD files, the official format for Xbox 360. Using a GOD extractor, modders were able to convert them into ISOs playable on emulators or jailbroken Xbox 360 consoles. The real breakthrough came when Nathan on X found a file called Xe03, also known as Fission, the official Xbox 360 emulator embedded in Xbox One and Series consoles. Inside the Xbox 360 environment, Microsoft already has another emulator, XeFu (Fusion), which emulates the original Xbox. This creates an emulator within an emulator.

The path to running Xbox 360 games on PC

Microsoft could have built a native x86 emulator for the original Xbox, but instead recompiled Xe03 to run on x86 PCs, essentially gifting the community a complete Xbox 360 emulator. By modifying the app container and swapping game packages, projects like XWine1 and independent reverse engineers bypassed the inner Fusion layer and managed to load raw Xbox 360 executables directly into Xe03. Games such as Plants vs. Zombies, Steins;Gate, Fuzion Frenzy, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles have been booted with varying degrees of stability.

Implications for emulation and handheld devices

Since Microsoft has already done the reverse engineering work, optimization remains the only challenge. Over time, more titles are expected to run flawlessly. Microsoft has promised further official releases, but has not mentioned Xbox 360 games. The discovery of Xe03 holds immense potential for Xbox 360 emulation on PC, especially for power-constrained devices like the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go series. The official emulator is more efficient than open-source alternatives like Xenia.

Graphical enhancements and official support

The PC version of Xe03 upscales the original 480p output to 4K, adds built-in V-Sync, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and borderless windowed modes. The games are part of the Xbox Anywhere program, so owning a digital license on console grants the PC version for free. Microsoft will soon introduce Xbox Achievements support. These elements have been welcomed by the modding community, which can now focus on optimization.
