Google has announced that Google Pics, the AI-powered image generation and editing application unveiled at Google I/O in May, will roll out to all Google Workspace users starting August 18, 2026. After three months of testing within Gemini Alpha, the app becomes officially available for business and education customers, marking a significant step in Google's strategy to compete with established tools like Adobe Express and Canva.
Google Pics integrates natively into Slides, Docs, and Sheets
Built on Google's proprietary Nano Banana imaging model, Google Pics will function both as a standalone web app and as an integrated component within Workspace apps. Users can generate images from text prompts, manipulate individual elements within images, correct or translate text, swap objects, and more, without needing to export files to external tools. This integration aims to address common shortcomings of AI-generated images, such as objects out of scale, incorrect text, or elements clashing with the background.

Direct competition with Canva and Adobe in the AI imaging market
Google Pics positions itself as a direct competitor to Canva's Magic Grab and Adobe's background removal tool. By offering editing capabilities directly within the office suite, Google hopes to capture a share of the visual productivity market currently dominated by these platforms. The initiative also comes in a regulatory context where the European Commission has ordered Google to grant rival AI apps the same Android access as Gemini. For more details, read EU Orders Google to Give Rival AI Apps the Same Android Access as Gemini.

Google stated that Pics will be enabled by default for all eligible Workspace customers, with an option to disable it. Starting February 28, 2027, generative AI usage limits will apply, but until then users will enjoy higher-priority access. No timeline has been provided for a consumer launch.
