Google has officially launched a beta version of Gmail Live, a feature that allows users to search their email inbox using voice commands powered by the Gemini AI assistant. Announced at Google I/O last month, the feature is now being tested on Android and iOS devices, as reported by 9to5Google. Selected users can see the Live icon appear in the Gmail search bar, next to the Gemini button.

When tapping the icon, the app opens in fullscreen mode with a warning that the feature is still in beta. Users can ask Gemini to find specific information, such as upcoming travel dates or the status of an order. According to 9to5Google, there is currently a short waiting period for voice commands to be processed. There is also a button to exit Gmail Live and return to the inbox, as well as a microphone mute toggle.

Exclusive availability for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers
Google has confirmed that Gmail Live, along with similar features coming to Docs and Keep, will initially be exclusive to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google Workspace business customers will be able to test them in preview. This move is part of Google's strategy to replicate the Gemini Live experience, the interactive voice chats with the chatbot, within its most popular applications. For those evaluating which AI assistant to choose, we have compared ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity in a dedicated article.
Voice search represents a step forward in productivity, reducing the need to manually type keywords. However, the current beta has some limitations: voice recognition may struggle with accents or background noise, and privacy remains a concern as commands are processed on Google's servers. Despite this, Gemini's integration into Gmail promises to simplify email management. For more insight into the potential of generative AI, you can read our article on comparing AI chatbots.

Google stated that Gmail Live will be rolled out to all subscribers over the summer. Meanwhile, other features such as Docs Live and Keep Live are under development. Docs Live will turn a stream of consciousness into a structured document draft, pulling details from other apps with user permission. Keep Live, already spotted by Android Authority, brings similar capabilities to the note-taking app. For further information on the evolution of Gemini, you can consult the Wikipedia page on Gemini.
