Apple unveiled at WWDC 2026 the largest software update wave in its recent history. iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate introduce over 250 tweaks, centered on a fully reinvented, AI-powered Siri. The company focused on refining the user experience rather than flashy features, but the impact is profound.
Siri AI: The Heart of the Update
The new assistant, called Siri AI, is now a true chatbot with personal context, onscreen awareness, and cross-app actions. A major addition is the dedicated Siri app, which Craig Federighi explained as a natural system extension to manage and resume conversations. Siri AI requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, but the most advanced features, like enhanced dictation and expressive voices, need 12 GB of unified memory, thus excluding the base iPhone 17 (8 GB) and older models.
Over 250 Refinements for Daily Use
Apple's published list covers every corner of the system: from Messages with auto-retry, nickname search, and smart suggestions, to a faster Camera and Photos with improved shared albums. Safari gains energy efficiency, Home supports 4K recordings, and the new customizable Liquid Glass arrives. Also notable is the new Tap to Share feature, letting merchants exchange data via NFC during payments, but it is not available in the European Union for undisclosed reasons.
Goodbye to Walkie-Talkie on Apple Watch
With watchOS 27, Apple quietly removed the Walkie-Talkie app, launched in 2018 and never significantly updated. The feature disappears from the developer beta, marking the end of a push-to-talk voice experiment.
Implications for Developers and Users
The hardware fragmentation for the most powerful Siri AI is a clear signal: Apple raises the bar for on-device intelligence, pushing users toward Pro models. For developers, integrating Siri into workflows becomes critical, similar to how Next.js Server Actions simplify form handling. The absence of Tap to Share in Europe may slow advanced contactless adoption on the continent. Public betas arrive in July, with final release in September.
