With the arrival of iOS 27, Apple is making a drastic change to how users interact with iPhone and iPad, altering a gesture that had remained unchanged for over 15 years. Since iOS 5 in 2011, the Notification Center could be opened by swiping down from the top edge of the display. Now, in the latest beta, invoking Siri AI takes priority and occupies most of the top area, relegating Notification Center to a smaller region in the top-left corner.
How Notification Center access changes on iPhone and iPad
By default, the gesture to open Notification Center remains the same. However, once the new Siri AI is enabled, swiping down from the center of the top edge activates the assistant instead of notifications. To view Notification Center, users must swipe down from the top-left corner. Notifications now animate in from that same corner, a clear indication of how Apple intends to direct users toward the smaller surface area of Notification Center. This change echoes the shift made with iPhone X, when Control Center moved from a bottom swipe to a top-right corner swipe.

Siri AI dominates the top edge of the screen
With iOS 27, Apple has heavily prioritized access to Siri AI. The majority of the top edge is devoted to invoking the new Siri experience. In the first beta of iPadOS 27, the area above Home screen app icons was almost entirely dedicated to Siri AI, shrinking the space for Notification Center to a minimum, especially if users disabled AM/PM display or the date. With beta 2, Apple improved the layout, creating more uniform zones: Notification Center on the left, Control Center on the right, and Siri invocation in the center. The Notification Center zone is now roughly the width of two app columns.

Positive feedback despite breaking muscle memory
After 15 years of habit, this change will take time to evaluate. However, early feedback from developers and beta users is surprisingly positive: the new Siri AI finally seems to work well, to the point that many consider the trade-off acceptable. As previously reported, Apple has also faced security issues such as the Hide My Email bug that exposed real addresses; the new notification handling, however, appears to be well received. It remains to be seen whether the Cupertino company will maintain this direction or make further adjustments before the final release.
