The new Mercedes-Benz VLE is a revolutionary electric "Grand Limousine" that redefines the family vehicle. With up to 416 horsepower and a massive 31.3-inch 8K screen, this van promises a living room experience on wheels. But can it make minivans cool again? Let's dive in.
Design and dimensions
Visually, the VLE fits the silhouette of traditional minivans but with more presence. At 216 inches long, it's 10 inches longer than the Mercedes GLS SUV. The interior ceiling height of 49 inches allows a six-foot tall person to move around easily. Mercedes calls it a "Grand Limousine," emphasizing luxury and space. The optimal configuration features two captain's chairs in the second row, but three-row seating for eight is available.
Interior and technology
The cabin is where the VLE shines. The rear seats are heated, ventilated, and massaging, with a generous recline (but not fully flat for safety). The Burmester 3D 22-speaker sound system supports Dolby Atmos and dynamically adjusts audio based on occupancy. The 31.3-inch ultrawide 8K display is the centerpiece, offering Disney+ and YouTube streaming, though lacking Chromecast or AirPlay. An HDMI port is available for external devices. For kids, the screen can split into dual 15-inch 4K displays, each with Bluetooth audio. The front MBUX Superscreen consists of a 10.25-inch gauge cluster, a 14-inch central infotainment screen, and a 14-inch passenger display that can stream video. RGB LED lighting and a nebulizer for custom scents complete the ambiance.

Performance and range
Two powertrains are offered: the front-wheel-drive VLE 300 with 272 horsepower, and the all-wheel-drive VLE 400 4MATIC with 416 horsepower. Both use a 115-kWh usable battery pack, providing a WLTP range of 435 kilometers (about 350 miles EPA). The 800-volt system supports charging at up to 300 kW, adding 200 miles in 15 minutes. Adaptive air suspension ensures a smooth ride in Comfort mode, while Sport mode firms up for better handling. Rear-wheel steering (up to 7 degrees) aids maneuverability despite the size.

Driving experience and safety
In Comfort mode, the VLE is relaxed and easy to drive. Sport mode adds responsiveness, but the van doesn't like being pushed hard. Safety features include active lane keeping on highways and an advanced automatic parking system that can navigate tight spots and even back out of dead ends. Full autonomy is missing, but the current assists are competent.
Practical features
The VLE offers USB-C ports in all rows, a fold-out laptop tray sturdy enough for a Lenovo X1 Carbon, a temperature-controlled compartment in the armrest for hot drinks, and a separate cooler in the back. The third row is surprisingly comfortable, with easy access via the middle seats that swing forward.

Availability and price
The VLE is expected to hit the US market in late 2027, with Europe possibly earlier. Pricing is not confirmed, but Andreas Zygan, Head of Development at Mercedes-Benz Vans, stated: "It will not be a cheap one, for sure." Expect a premium price tag likely over $100,000.
