A survey of 6,000 UK adults has revealed that the majority of the population has limited trust in weather forecasts generated by artificial intelligence models. While 30% of respondents said they were "very confident" in traditional numerical weather prediction methods, only 11% expressed the same level of confidence in machine learning-based systems. This trust gap could impact the adoption of AI technology in the meteorological field.

The research, published in the journal Artificial Intelligence for the Earth Systems, compared public perceptions of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), based on physical equations, and Machine Learning Weather Prediction (MLWP). The results show that 87.7% of respondents feel confident in NWP forecasts, while only 49.4% place the same trust in MLWP systems. Although this figure may seem encouraging, the drop in confidence is significant when considering full confidence levels.

Professor Kirstine Dale, Chief AI Officer at the Met Office, added that the organization is exploring "ways of blending physics-based and AI-based modelling to deliver the forecasts that we all rely on." As with all science developments, she noted, "we will robustly evaluate and validate any changes to our approach to weather forecasting before we introduce them into the model."
