The iconic sandbox game from Mojang officially arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, bringing with it a graphical enhancement called Vibrant Visuals and a digital upgrade path for owners of the original Switch. The announcement, made via an official blog post, clarifies that the title was already playable on the new console thanks to backward compatibility, but this version fully exploits the hardware capabilities of Nintendo's platform.

The Switch 2 version of Minecraft introduces a renewed visual experience, with dynamic lighting, more realistic shadows, and superior environmental details compared to its predecessor. However, this graphical update will not be available in all game modes. According to Mojang, split-screen mode and certain worlds or content from the Marketplace will not support Vibrant Visuals. A notable exception is the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, exclusive to Nintendo versions, which will be updated to include the new visual effects.

Upgrade path and save transfer for Switch owners

Mojang has confirmed the existence of a digital upgrade path for those who purchased the game on the original Switch. Details on whether the upgrade will be free or paid have not yet been disclosed, with the company merely promising more information in the future. Meanwhile, users can rest assured regarding their game data. It has been specified that save data from the original Switch version of Minecraft will transfer to the new console, allowing players to continue their adventures without losing progress.

Recent additions and future prospects for the Minecraft franchise

The world of Minecraft continues to expand. In addition to the Switch 2 launch, Mojang recently introduced the ability to sit, a small but welcome addition. Furthermore, the sequel to Minecraft Dungeons is scheduled for September, while the film adaptation will have a second chapter planned for 2027. These developments highlight how the brand remains central to Microsoft's strategy, despite recent corporate reorganizations and layoffs.

One aspect that has raised concerns among fans is the new internal governance structure. Mojang and King, the developer of Candy Crush, now report directly to the new CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma. This choice has fueled fears that Microsoft's influence might alter the essence of the game, but so far there are no concrete signs of that. The community remains vigilant, while anticipation for the Switch 2 release grows.
