In a detailed blog post, the company disclosed the results of an in-depth analysis conducted by its internal compatibility team on over 100 PC cases. The outcome is surprising and potentially problematic for custom PC builders. More than half of the tested cases (56 out of over 100) show significant discrepancies between the official data published by manufacturers and the actual measurements taken by Noctua. The differences range from a minimum of 3.5 millimeters less to a maximum of 10 millimeters more, a margin that can mean the difference between a perfect fit and a component that does not fit at all.
When the case is larger than expected, allowing a better cooler to be installed
Noctua identified two opposite scenarios. In the first, the real dimensions of the case are larger than those declared by the manufacturer. This is an unexpected advantage for the user, as it allows the installation of a larger and more performant cooler than originally thought. A prime example is the NZXT H2 Flow case, officially listed as compatible with a maximum CPU cooler height of 75 millimeters, but actually capable of accommodating a model up to 79 millimeters. Similarly, the Thermaltake TR100 offers 2.7 millimeters of extra space, while the Corsair Frame 4000D provides a full 10 millimeters of additional clearance. On one hand, this means that those who purchased a cooler based on official specifications can rest easy, but on the other hand, Noctua emphasizes this is a missed opportunity. With those extra millimeters, one could have chosen a larger cooler with better performance, possibly at a similar price. This detail can significantly impact CPU cooling, especially in overclocked systems or with high-end processors.

The second scenario is decidedly more critical. In some cases, the actual dimensions are smaller than declared, with potentially disastrous consequences for assembly.
