Octopus Energy and CATL Launch Battery Swap Stations for Electric Trucks in Europe: First UK Hubs by 2027

A major breakthrough for heavy-duty electric mobility comes from the collaboration between Octopus Energy, the UK's largest energy supplier, and CATL, the world's leading electric vehicle battery manufacturer. The two companies have announced a plan to bring Chinese-style battery swap stations to Europe, specifically designed for electric trucks. The goal is to create a network of hubs capable of replacing depleted batteries with charged ones in a matter of minutes, overcoming one of the main barriers to EV adoption in heavy transport.

Charging times slashed to minutes for electric trucks

The battery swap system, already widespread in Asia with operators like Nio and Gogoro, is now being adapted for industrial vehicles. Each hub will be able to serve thousands of trucks per day, swapping exhausted cells for pre-charged modules in times comparable to a diesel fill-up. This approach eliminates the need for long fast-charging stops, which often take over an hour for heavy vehicles. According to William Rowe, CEO of the joint venture named Swaptopus, the stations can also store energy and feed it back to the grid during peak times, acting as small power plants.

Economic and logistical benefits for road transport

The solution proposed by Octopus and CATL could significantly reduce operating costs for truck fleets. By using smaller batteries, vehicles weigh less and consume less energy. Additionally, the option to lease batteries rather than purchase them lowers the initial investment. However, questions remain about battery cycle life and the actual convenience for transport companies, which may see reduced decision-making autonomy. Despite this, the initiative has already attracted interest from several logistics operators, and the first UK mega hubs are expected by 2027. For those interested in technological innovations, it is worth also checking out other upcoming Apple products. More details on the battery swapping concept are available on Wikipedia.
