A new survey by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky reveals a worrying trend: Generation Z, despite being digital natives, neglects basic cybersecurity measures. Only 27% of respondents use antivirus software on their mobile devices, even though 57% spend more time online than offline. The study, which surveyed 7,200 individuals across 18 countries, found that 52% have experienced an attack on their devices, data, or online accounts. Yet, only a quarter take standard precautions like mobile antivirus.

Weak password habits and lack of backups leave Gen Z vulnerable

Less than a third of Gen Z users regularly back up important data stored on their phones. Password changes are infrequent, making accounts easy targets. Social media accounts are hacked for 17% of respondents, and gaming accounts for 12%. A compromised smartphone can grant access to personal photos, ID documents, emails, and financial details, leading to identity theft or direct financial losses. Irina Ermilova, Vice President for Consumer Product Management at Kaspersky, stated that familiarity with digital services does not translate to security expertise. Young people navigate apps confidently but fail to spot scams or manage passwords securely.

Kaspersky launches interactive game to educate Gen Z

To address this gap, Kaspersky introduced Case 404, a point-and-click cyber-detective adventure set in a futuristic world. The game presents fictional cases inspired by real digital threats, teaching players to recognize phishing attempts and scams. The goal is to make cybersecurity habits as natural as messaging or social media use. For more on how technology companies shape digital life, see the article about OpenAI first hardware device.
