Oratomic, a quantum computing startup founded by Caltech physicists, has raised $300 million in Series A funding to develop a commercially viable quantum computer that needs just 10,000 to 20,000 qubits. The company bypasses the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) stage and aims for fault-tolerant machines by the end of the decade.

Record-breaking funding round signals investor confidence

The round was co-led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Lowercarbon Capital, and Bain Capital. Vinod Khosla called it his firm's largest initial investment ever. This excitement mirrors broader market trends: startups like Infleqtion and Quantinuum have gone public this year, while Rigetti and IonQ shares have surged. Oratomic's approach stands out because it uses optical tweezers to trap individual atoms, drastically reducing the qubits needed for error correction.

Error correction breakthrough cuts qubit requirements

Unlike competitors aiming for millions of qubits, Oratomic's physicists discovered a method requiring far fewer qubits for error correction. CEO Dolev Bluvstein stated, "Only after this breakthrough did we all change our minds about starting a company." The startup has already demonstrated all core components at a smaller scale. While PsiQuantum also skips NISQ but targets a million qubits, Oratomic claims its simpler architecture is cheaper and faster to scale. The goal is to build a utility-scale quantum computer by 2030.

Potential applications across industries

A full-scale quantum computer could enable breakthroughs in biotech, chemistry, logistics, AI, and cryptography. The investment wave in quantum computing continues, with venture capital flowing into companies like Oratomic. Meanwhile, consumer tech also sees advances: Apple recently launched weekend deals on AirPods 4 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, and iOS 27 overhauled the Mail app with AI search. These developments highlight how innovation spans both foundational and consumer-facing technologies. Oratomic's 300 million raise is a bet that practical quantum computing is closer than many think.
