A team of researchers is pushing the boundaries of organ preservation – aiming to keep human organs alive outside the body for days instead of hours. The goal: real organ banks. Today, a donated heart lasts 4–6 hours on ice. Extend that to 24 or 48 hours, and transplant logistics change completely.
This matters for anyone in digital, especially in Europe and Italy. Organ transplantation is a complex chain: logistics, immune matching, emergency management. Today it runs on phone calls and paper. If organs become storable, algorithmic management becomes possible – and that requires data, software, infrastructure. Europe has some systems (Eurotransplant, Scandiatransplant), but they are fragmented. Italy's Sistema Informativo Trapianti is only partially digital. Without a leap in digital readiness, biotech breakthroughs stay in the lab.

Our position is clear: Italy cannot treat this innovation as sci-fi. Numbers are stark: over 8,000 people on the transplant waiting list, hundreds die every year. Longer preservation cuts waste and costs, but only if backed by a digital platform that handles donations, transport, and matching in real time. We come from accounting and ERP: we know that any process without measurement is a hidden cost. The same applies to transplants: without KPIs, traceability, and interoperability between regions, the benefit is halved.
We work with companies in Southern Italy, where the digital divide is deeper. Italian SMEs – including biotech startups – need SaaS tools, automation, and data security. If Italy wants a role in this field, it must stop treating healthcare IT as an expense. Invest in sovereign cloud, DevOps skills, open standards. Otherwise, American and Chinese patents will dictate terms for our own healthcare system.
