Plaud Tops $100M ARR with AI Notetakers After Shipping Over 2 Million Devices

In the landscape of AI hardware, few companies manage to turn an idea into commercial success. Plaud, a startup specializing in AI-powered notetakers, is charting a different path. The company announced it has sold over 2 million devices, including Plaud Pins and credit-card-shaped gadgets that stick to the back of phones. Meanwhile, its software business has reached an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $100 million.

Hardware driving service adoption

Plaud argues that many AI companies rely on digital documents and prompts typed from memory. Its approach is radically different: screenless devices that allow real conversations and later recall key points, summaries, and action items. "Most AI companies have scaled through software behind a screen. We took a different path. The conversations that actually move things forward don't happen on a keyboard. We built the interface for the post-screen world. And the market validated it," said Nathan Xu, co-founder and CEO of Plaud.

After launching the $179 Plaud Pro last year, the company added the new Plaud Pin S at a similar price. Beyond hardware, software development has accelerated: earlier this year, a desktop app was introduced that can take Granola-style notes via system audio for online meetings. Last month, Plaud Teams arrived with shared memory targeting enterprises.

Users who buy the hardware get 300 free transcription minutes. For those with many daily meetings, the free limit runs out quickly. Paid monthly, annual, or add-on plans generate most revenue: nearly 50% of device users upgrade from the basic plan to Pro or Unlimited. Plaud does not yet sell standalone software subscriptions; only device owners can purchase paid plans.

Competition and positioning

The AI notetaker hardware market is crowded. Competitors include accessories company Anker, Transsion-backed Viaim, Sequoia China-backed Vibe, and YC-backed Pocket. Plaud stands out for its combination of discreet hardware and integrated software. For more on wearable AI devices, see the article on Snap Specs, another screenless AI hardware example. Additionally, the growing use of AI in software is evident in gaming, as reported in Over a Fifth of Steam Next Fest Demos Use Generative AI.

Plaud's milestone proves there is a market for dedicated AI productivity devices capable of generating significant recurring revenue. According to the original source on TechCrunch, the company now aims to expand its enterprise presence. For a general overview of transcription technologies, refer to Wikipedia on transcription.
