Sony has announced that by 2028 it will cease production of physical discs for PlayStation, marking the end of an era for optical media. The decision, communicated through the PlayStation Blog, is part of a transition toward a fully digital ecosystem. At the same time, the Japanese company will proceed with the closure of the PS3 and PlayStation Vita digital storefronts, a step it attempted five years ago and then reversed after fan backlash. This time, there seems to be no room for reconsideration.

The move is driven by numbers. According to Sony, in the last fiscal year (April 2025 – March 2026), nearly 80% of full game purchases for PS4 and PS5 were digital. That figure rose to 85% in the latest quarter (January to March 2026). Third-party publishers like Capcom reported 93% digital sales, with expectations to reach 95.4% in the current fiscal year. These trends make physical media increasingly marginal.

The end of discs hits game preservation hard

The decision to eliminate discs has profound implications for video game preservation. The shutdown of PS3 and Vita stores, expected over the next year, will make thousands of digital-only titles unavailable. A 2021 analysis by VGC estimated that about 2,200 games would become unpurchasable, including 138 exclusives not available on other platforms. Although numbers may have shifted, the problem remains.

Sony stated that after closure, "players will still be able to download previously purchased content for the foreseeable future." But the last part of that sentence is ominous: it implies that one day the servers will be shut down entirely, preventing downloads of owned games. Under these terms, digital ownership becomes an illusion.

Impact on consumers and the second-hand market

Without discs, players will lose the ability to resell, trade, or lend their games. The second-hand market for PlayStation titles is destined to disappear. Collector's editions will contain only a digital code; physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI will ship with a code inside the box as an anti-leak measure. Furthermore, Sony confirmed that all digital sales grant a non-commercial license revocable at the company's discretion. A spokesperson told Game File: "With all digital content, including games, movies, and music, players are purchasing a personal license for non-commercial use." This centralized DRM system gives Sony control over pricing and availability that never existed with physical media.

The shift to digital could also exclude people with slow or unstable internet connections. Companies specializing in physical game sales will suffer a heavy blow. Frank Cifaldi, director of the Video Game History Foundation, stated: "Museums and archives have been preparing for this future, but the industry doesn't offer legal solutions to preserve digital-only content. Asking museums to download a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI and hope it runs in 50 years is not a preservation strategy."

PS6 and a disc-less future

With this move, it seems almost certain that the PS6 will not include a disc drive, nor will it be able to run physical PS4 or PS5 games. This may contain production costs but marks a point of no return. Microsoft, with its Project Helix, appears to maintain a hybrid approach, but market dynamics push all platforms toward digital.

Sony's decisions, while responding to natural consumption trends, represent a heavy blow to video game preservation. As scholars and associations point out, entire swaths of gaming history risk being lost forever.
