Square has launched a new integration that allows restaurants to accept orders directly from ChatGPT and Claude chatbots, bypassing the high commissions charged by traditional delivery aggregators. This move marks a significant step toward so-called agentic commerce, where AI assistants act on behalf of consumers to discover and purchase products. Restaurants using Square can now be found and ordered through AI with no additional marketplace fee, paying only standard transaction processing fees.

Lower commissions compared to DoorDash and Uber Eats

Independent restaurant margins have been squeezed for years by aggregator commissions. DoorDash charges up to 30% for its Premier plan, Uber Eats up to 30% for premium placement, and Grubhub between 5% and 20%. On top of that, payment processing fees add 2.5% to 3.05% plus a fixed amount per order. With the new Square integration, commissions drop to the standard processing fee: roughly 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction for Square Plus and Premium plans, with no marketplace commission. For delivery orders, Square uses a white-label courier network with a flat fee (typically $7 to $10) instead of a percentage of the basket, further protecting food margins. AI-driven automation becomes accessible even to small restaurant owners.

How the technical integration works

The system is live for all U.S.-based Food & Beverage sellers with an active Square Online profile. Restaurants manage menus, hours, and prices from their Square Dashboard. When a consumer asks ChatGPT or Claude to find a nearby restaurant and place an order, the AI queries Square's live catalog, which includes availability and complex modifiers. The customer can complete the purchase within the chat via Order by Cash App or be redirected to the restaurant's checkout page with the basket pre-filled. The order flows directly into the Square POS and kitchen display system, just like an in-store order. For enterprise testing, operators can invoke the plugin using the @ symbol within ChatGPT or via the Claude extension directory. Square has collaborated with Square financial services to ensure compliance.

An AI agent ecosystem for commerce

According to Morgan Kuntze, Global Partnerships Lead at Block (Square's parent company), the goal is to help sellers be present wherever customers go, without having to chase every new platform. Square is working with Amazon to integrate Alexa+ and with Google to co-develop the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for local ordering. With over 4.5 million active sellers, Square positions itself as the universal connective tissue for agentic commerce, a market projected to reach $385 billion in U.S. ecommerce spending by 2030. This approach lets restaurants focus on food while technology works silently in the background.
