Toy Story 5: A Thoughtful Critique of Technology for Kids

With its fifth installment, Toy Story 5 marks a significant shift for the Pixar franchise: digital technology finally enters the cloth-and-plastic world of toys. Directed by franchise veteran Andrew Stanton and McKenna Grace, the film wisely avoids the easy trope of portraying technology as inherently bad. Instead, it presents technology as a disruptive force that can be either helpful or harmful depending on how it is used. The core message is clear: parents must take a hands-on approach to help children manage their gadgets, especially regarding screen time and online social dynamics.

The story centers on Bonnie, a young girl struggling to make friends who has inherited Woody, Buzz, and the other toys from the first three films. She is the only kid in her neighborhood without a Lilypad tablet; she prefers old-fashioned play, crafting scenarios purely from imagination. Her reluctant parents decide to get her a Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee) to help her connect with other children. But the tablet, like an overbearing consultant, takes matters into its own hands: it sends friend requests to several girls, and Bonnie miraculously gets invited to a sleepover. However, instead of playing together, all the girls zone out on their screens, barely speaking. Those same girls later bully Bonnie for her old toys, prompting her parents to wisely disable the tablet's social network access.

It might seem crazy that parents have to worry about social networking for eight-year-olds, but platforms like Zigazoo and JusTalk Kids already exist. They market themselves as safe spaces for chatting with close friends and family, but there is still room for awful social dynamics. Kids will be kids, and many can be little jerks. Toy Story 5 does not demonize technology; instead, it invites mature reflection: the solution is not elimination but mindful management.

The role of parental responsibility

While Lilypad struggles to help Bonnie connect, older toys like Jessie (Joan Cusack) realize they are out of touch. When Jessie tries to sneak into the sleepover, she becomes a source of embarrassment. Research shows a link between anxiety management and imaginative play in kids, and the Toy Story cast are convenient messengers for that information. Yet the film also finds room for the tablet: a message board app on Lilypad helps Bonnie connect with Blaze, another girl who still plays with toys the old-fashioned way. Without the tablet, they might never have met. It is hokey but works in the context of the film, reflecting the reality parents face today.

Despite potential harms, it is helpful for kids to watch TV on the go or use educational apps. iPadOS and Android offer tons of educational games and video chatting apps for staying in touch with distant relatives. The key is moderation and parental supervision. Toy Story 5 would have been even more insightful if it included new forms of digital play, like Minecraft, which closely mirrors imaginative play and grows with children. Now that tablets have entered the Toy Story universe, it is unclear where the franchise can go next. Pixar has wrung the series' core concept dry: we have explored the inner lives of toys, their existential struggles, and even death (Toy Story 3 traumatized a generation). This fifth chapter is not as essential as the original trilogy, but it serves as a reminder to parents that they cannot sit back and relax when it comes to technology.
