Waymo Recalls Nearly 4,000 Robotaxis Over Highway Construction Zone Issues

Waymo has issued a voluntary recall for nearly 4,000 robotaxis after identifying at least 13 instances where its autonomous vehicles drove into highway sections closed for construction. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on June 8, aims to prevent further incidents and improve the software's behavior around construction zones.

Six incidents occurred in Phoenix, Arizona, in April, and seven in San Francisco, California, in May. In one case caught on video, a Waymo vehicle sped through cones and was chased by police, with the passenger later telling CBS News he feared for his life. Waymo offered three free rides as compensation. Since May 19, the company has restricted all highway operations and is developing a software fix, while continuing surface street service except during severe weather.

Software Prioritization Flaw

According to NHTSA documents, Waymo's robotaxis failed to recognize ramp closure signs and drove into pre-planned construction zones. The software prioritized avoiding other highway hazards over detecting construction barriers. This is Waymo's sixth recall; previous recalls addressed flooding, school bus violations, low-speed collisions, and tow truck issues. The NHTSA and National Transportation Safety Board are already investigating Waymo's autonomous driving system following a January incident where a robotaxi struck a child near a school.

Despite these challenges, Waymo claims its vehicles have logged over 170 million autonomous miles and demonstrate a 13x reduction in serious injury crashes compared to human drivers. The Alphabet-owned company is rapidly expanding, planning launches in over 20 cities this year including London and Tokyo. However, expansion has highlighted edge cases like highway construction zones that the software struggles to handle.

This recall fits into a broader narrative of AI safety concerns, as explored in the article US AI Under Scrutiny. Cybersecurity vulnerabilities also remain a parallel threat, as seen in the FortiBleed campaign. For more context on Waymo's history and technology, refer to Waymo on Wikipedia.

The recall underscores the complexities of deploying autonomous vehicles at scale. Waymo's proactive approach, including voluntary recall and transparent communication with regulators, may help restore public trust. As the company works on a permanent fix, the autonomous driving industry watches closely, knowing that safety is the ultimate benchmark for adoption.
