MaiaSpace Delay to 2027 Reshapes the Future of European Space Launches

[2026-03-30] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono
The European space sector is gearing up for a new phase with MaiaSpace, the startup controlled by ArianeGroup. The announcement of the postponement of the first launch of its reusable space rocket, initially scheduled for the end of 2026, has shifted focus to early 2027. This delay, however, does not represent a step backward, but an opportunity to optimize preparations and consolidate infrastructure.

Kourou: A Space Hub in Rebirth

The decision to postpone the launch allows MaiaSpace to concentrate resources on the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Here, where Soyuz rockets once took off, the integration and launch site for the new launch vehicle will rise. Utilizing the existing facilities, which have been unused since the end of Roscosmos operations, represents a significant advantage. MaiaSpace will be able to reuse much of the infrastructure, reducing time and costs by several tens of millions of euros. The integration building, the railway for component transport, the liquid oxygen storage system, the fueling plants, and the flame deflector will all be key elements for the project's success.

An Innovative Launch Vehicle

MaiaSpace's two-stage reusable space rocket aims to carry up to 1.5 tons to LEO (Low Earth Orbit) without reusing the first stage. To increase performance, a kick-stage is also planned, which will allow adding up to 1 ton of payload, extending the vehicle's capabilities. MaiaSpace's goal is to launch the first vehicle within five years of its founding, which occurred in April 2022. An ambitious milestone that, if achieved, would have a significant impact both at the European and global levels.

Next Steps and Collaborations

The company plans to bring the vehicle to the launch pad by the end of 2026, to perform combined tests and prepare for the first flight in the first quarter of 2027. MaiaSpace fits into an evolving European space landscape, alongside entities like Isar Aerospace, PLD Space, and Italy's Avio, which could benefit from greater launch freedom. This scenario promises to bring new innovations and strengthen Europe's position in the space launch sector.
