Today, it takes 10 to 15 years and billions of dollars to bring a molecule to market. Artificial intelligence promises to speed things up — but there's a catch: data.
According to a July 2026 MIT Technology Review analysis, the real bottleneck is not the algorithm but the quality and availability of clinical, genomic and lab data. Big pharma and big tech (Google DeepMind, Nvidia, Microsoft) are building closed ecosystems, training models on proprietary data. Europe, with its public healthcare data heritage and GDPR regulations, risks being left out of the game.
Why it matters for small businesses and Italy
This isn't just a multinational problem. Italian pharma and biotech SMEs — and there are excellent ones from Lombardy to the South — will depend on models trained on US or Chinese data. Translation: licences, royalties, strategic dependency. If the model doesn't know the genetic variants of the Italian population or side effects on Mediterranean patients, results will be less reliable for us. And the cost of adapting it becomes another entry barrier.
