AI for science needs reasoning, not just data — Europe risks being left behind

Every few decades, someone announces the end of science. In 1903, physicist Albert Michelson wrote that the “facts of physical science have all been discovered.” In the 1980s, Stephen Hawking predicted theoretical physics might be finished by the end of the century. Today, with the explosive arrival of artificial intelligence, the same script repeats: this time, AI is blamed for making the scientific method obsolete. The reality, as often happens, is more nuanced — and for Europe, it's a wake-up call.

The point is not whether AI can replace scientists, but how. Current models, based on massive datasets, excel at finding patterns but fail when reasoning about causes and effects is needed. Science, however, is exactly that: understanding why a phenomenon occurs, not just predicting it will. Here lies the political crux: whoever controls data controls AI, but whoever controls reasoning controls science. Europe, with its GDPR and fragmented data landscape, risks falling behind in the race for scientific models, while the US and China invest billions in dedicated infrastructure.
