Your data is worth more than a free antivirus. Or maybe not? Every day we see SMEs install an antivirus "just in case" and only discover after a ransomware attack that it was little more than a placebo. The question we often get from our clients is: in 2025, with threats bypassing classic signature-based detection, does it still make sense to buy a traditional antivirus or do you need an EDR? And what is the real cost difference?

We, at Meteora Web, have been working with businesses since 2017. We come from an accounting background, so before recommending a solution we ask: how much does it cost and what is the return? In this guide we explain the difference between antivirus and EDR, whether the former is still enough, and how to choose without throwing money at phantom security.

Traditional Antivirus vs EDR: What's the Difference and Why Should You Care?

Let's start with the basics. A traditional antivirus works on signatures: it compares files against a database of known malware. If a virus hasn't been catalogued yet, it slips through. An EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) instead analyzes behavior: it detects suspicious actions even if the file is unknown, collects telemetry, and in advanced cases can automatically respond by isolating the process.

Why should you care? Because today over 70% of attacks on SMEs use fileless malware or exploit legitimate applications (PowerShell, macros). A signature-based antivirus won't see them. We once resolved an infection on a client's server precisely because the EDR had blocked a PowerShell launched from an Excel attachment – the free antivirus was completely unaware.

In short: antivirus is a guard who only recognizes already known thieves. EDR is an investigator who also notices unusual behavior.

The blunt answer is no, not alone. We're not saying throw away your antivirus. Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11) is already a good starting point – but it's the bare minimum. For real protection you need a behavioral layer. Enter EDR.

A common mistake: thinking “we're small, nobody will attack us.” False. Cybercriminals look for easy targets. Italian SMEs are hit hardest precisely because they have fewer defenses. We see it every day. Security in Italian SMEs is systematically underestimated.

How Much Does an EDR Actually Cost Compared to an Antivirus for Your SME?

Now we get down to business – and we come from accounting. An enterprise antivirus can cost between €10 and €30 per seat per year. A basic EDR starts from €40–60 per seat, but can go up to €150 for solutions with an integrated SOC. It seems expensive, but let's look at the numbers.

How much does a ransomware attack cost? A three-day downtime, lost customers, data recovery. According to the Ponemon Institute, the average cost for an SME in recent reports exceeds €20,000. Even if your risk is low, an EDR investment pays for itself if it prevents even a single attack.

Real-world example: we followed a client with 10 seats. Free antivirus (Defender). Accident: an employee opened an infected attachment. The EDR (which they didn't have) would have blocked execution. Result: 2 days of downtime, €4,000 in consulting fees, data from backups. The annual cost of the EDR? About €600. The difference is staggering.

Our advice: if you have fewer than 20 seats, consider solutions like Microsoft Defender for Business (included in some Business Premium plans) or SentinelOne. If you have more resources, consider an EDR with a managed service (MDR) so you don't have to handle alerts yourself.

How to Choose the Right Solution Between Antivirus, EDR, and XDR Without Falling for Hype?

The market is full of offers. Here are the criteria we use for our clients:

  • Cloud vs on-prem coverage: for most SMEs, a cloud (SaaS) solution is simpler and safer. On-prem only makes sense if you have an internal IT department and particularly sensitive data.
  • Ease of management: if you don't have a sysadmin, choose a product with a simple dashboard and phone support. CrowdStrike and SentinelOne are powerful but complex; Microsoft Defender for Business is more friendly.
  • Integration: the EDR must work with your existing antivirus (if it doesn't replace it), with Office 365, and with any backups. Avoid solutions that require disabling Defender – better one that enhances it.
  • Managed service (MDR): many vendors offer a team that analyzes alerts on your behalf. For an SME with 5–50 seats, this is often the wisest choice. Costs a bit more but prevents neglect of false positives.

Watch out for hype: be wary of anyone selling “AI antivirus” without details. Always ask: how does it detect threats? Which independent tests has it passed (AV-Test, MITRE ATT&CK)? Does it have ransomware rollback capabilities? If they can't answer, walk away.

Don't wait until it's too late. Here's what you can do today:

  1. Check your current state: open Windows Security and verify that Defender is active and updated. On Mac, ensure XProtect is active.
  2. Evaluate your fleet: how many workstations? How many servers? Which data is critical? Do you need EDR on everything or just servers?
  3. Define a budget: estimate €50–70 per seat per year. If no budget, start with Microsoft Defender for Business (≈$3/user/month).
  4. Choose a vendor with a free trial: test SentinelOne, Bitdefender GravityZone, or Microsoft. Evaluate the console and support.
  5. Complement with training: even the best EDR won't save you from a distracted employee. Run a basic course on phishing and password security.
