Incoming Apple CEO John Ternus has greenlit a major product pivot, cancelling both the second-generation Vision Pro and the lighter Vision Air. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple now has only two smart glasses products in development: AI-powered glasses to rival Meta Ray-Bans, expected in 2027, and advanced AR glasses with optical waveguides, likely not before 2029. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman confirms the Vision Air was discontinued in October 2025.
A bet on the mass market
Kuo calls the move “the right call” as it shifts resources toward wearable devices with broader consumer appeal. The original Vision Pro, while technically impressive, never achieved mass adoption due to its high price and niche use cases. By focusing on smart glasses, Apple aims to create a daily wearable seamlessly integrated with its ecosystem. Ternus takes over as CEO on September 1, marking a clear strategic shift.
Three US Apple Stores to close permanently
Apple will shut down three retail locations on June 20: Trumbull (Connecticut), North County (California), and Towson Town Center (Maryland). The Towson store made history in 2022 as Apple's first unionized store in the US, securing a collective bargaining agreement in 2024. The union, IAM CORE, accuses Apple of union-busting because unionized employees are not being offered transfers to nearby stores, unlike non-union staff. Apple states it is following the contract's terms, which only guarantee transfers if a new store opens within 50 miles.
Texas App Store age verification goes live June 4
Texas's SB 2420 takes effect tomorrow, requiring Apple and Google to verify user age during Apple Account creation. Minors must be part of a Family Sharing group with parental consent for all downloads and purchases. Developers must adopt the Declared Age Range and Significant Change APIs, facing civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation. Apple had fought the law, arguing it forces users to share personal data even for simple apps like weather. A federal judge had blocked the law in December, but the Fifth Circuit temporarily lifted the injunction pending appeal.
These developments paint a picture of Apple in transition: redefining its hardware strategy, adjusting its retail footprint, and navigating new privacy and child-safety regulations.
