Cambridge Study: Fan Travel Causes 80% of 2026 World Cup Emissions

A new study from the University of Cambridge, published in Communications Sustainability, has examined the climate impact of mega-events, focusing on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Coldplay's 2024 European tour. Researchers developed a climate viability framework that weighs economic and social benefits against greenhouse gas emissions costs.

Expansion to 48 teams increases total emissions by 15%

According to estimates, the increase from 32 to 48 teams added approximately 590,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, bringing the total to an estimated 4.23 million metric tons. Of this, 82% is attributable to fan travel, with international flights alone generating 3.07 million metric tons. This is comparable to Iceland's annual emissions. If the climate cost were passed on to spectators, each ticket would cost an additional $114 on average.

The Coldplay model: 46% emission reduction driven by fans

Researchers also analyzed Coldplay's 2024 European tour, which covered 10 cities and 32 shows with 1.9 million tickets. The band adopted measures like mobile battery systems, solar power, and kinetic dance floors, but 98% of emission reductions came from voluntary fan behavior. Through a dedicated app comparing low-carbon transport options and merchandise discounts for eco-friendly travel, the tour cut fan travel emissions by 48% and overall emissions by 46% compared to a typical tour. This highlights the critical role of spectators in climate action.

Proposals for more sustainable events

The researchers propose a two-stage economic model. First, compare economic benefits with emission costs: if costs exceed benefits, the event should be scaled back or canceled. For the 2026 World Cup and Coldplay tour, benefits exceed costs, but the margin narrows when considering a higher social cost of carbon. The second stage incorporates climate damage into total costs, with shared responsibility between organizers and fans. Concrete solutions include discounts for train or carpool travel, selecting host cities closer to visitor flows (over 40% of international fans come from Europe, so hosting in Europe would significantly reduce emissions), and a carbon levy on tickets proportional to price. A broadcasting fee of $4.50 per viewer could offset the estimated total cost of $787 million.
