China’s latest AI leap is here: a model that beats Western benchmarks in language understanding and logical reasoning. The news comes from MIT Technology Review, but this time the jump is quantitative — training costs halved, energy efficiency tripled. While Brussels drafts regulations and Rome announces task forces, Beijing has already updated its ecosystem with open APIs available to developers worldwide, sanctions aside.

Why does this matter to a small workshop in Sicily? More than you’d think. The software we use every day — from CRM to ERP — increasingly relies on foreign AI models. If the best value for money comes from China, Italian SMEs will adopt it. European tech sovereignty is decided not in labs but in digital shopping carts.

We, at Meteora Web, see companies every day locked into subscription platforms with data held abroad. When the provider raises prices or changes terms, the client has no alternative. The same pattern is now playing out with AI: whoever produces the model controls access. And if that model is Chinese, geopolitics becomes concrete for a clothing store in Sciacca.

Our position is clear: Europe cannot merely regulate what it does not produce

Europe’s AI Act is a step forward, but not enough. Real investment is needed in cloud infrastructure, open public data for training, and incentives for EU-based model development. Italian SMEs don’t have the luxury to wait — they need accessible, transparent, and secure tools today. We built a proprietary social media platform because we wanted control over our clients’ data. The same principle applies to AI: better an imperfect European model that you govern than an efficient Chinese one with no guarantees.

What to do, concretely? Developers: test open models like Mistral AI or the EuroLLM initiative. Business owners: ask your vendor where your data is processed. Policymakers: push for public tenders that fund not only research but also distribution of AI solutions to SMEs in Southern Italy. The digital divide is also geographic — we work to bridge it every day, but without a strong European ecosystem, it’s a losing battle.
